NFL union hits owners on collusion
[info]lillierm

The players union claimed yesterday that the NFL imposed a secret salary cap during the uncapped 2010 season that cost the players at least $1 billion.

The complaint was filed in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis, which oversees the Reggie White settlement covering NFL labor matters. But the league says the union has no grounds for the action and is prohibited from filing it by the collective bargaining agreement.

The complaint claims a “conspiracy” to set a $123 million salary cap for the 2010 season, when owners did not have the authority to do so. The Cowboys and Redskins have had their future salary caps lowered for overspending in 2010, Dallas by $10 million over two seasons, Washington by a whopping $36 million.

Both teams lost a grievance against those reductions on Tuesday.

“When the rules are broken in a way that hurts the game, we have an obligation to act. We cannot stand by when we now know that the owners conspired to collude,” union chief DeMaurice Smith said yesterday.

In response to the reopening of the Reggie White lawsuit, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said, “There was no collusion. There was no agreement. These claims are totally unfounded.”

The NFL has considered the 2010 uncapped season a closed matter ever since the new labor deal was signed last summer. Clearly, the players do not, and now are seeking compensation for lost wages caused by collusion among the teams.

“Our union recently learned that there was a secret salary cap agreement in an uncapped year,” NFL Players Association President Domonique Foxworth said. “The complaint is our effort to fulfill our duty to every NFL player. They deserve to know, above all, the facts and the truth about this conspiracy.”

Lightning 16s win Hall of Fame Classic crown
[info]lillierm

Khadeen Carrington took another step toward this weekend toward establishing himself as one of the nation’s top sophomores by leading the New York Lightning to the Basketball Hall of Fame Spring Classic crown in Springfield, Mass.

The Bishop Loughlin standout scored 32 points as the Lightning 16U topped Connecticut Select, 67-65, in the championship for its first title of the spring AAU season.

“Week-in and week-out, he’s proven he’s a high-level guy,” Lightning coach Chris Williams said. “If there was an MVP in the division, it would’ve been him. He really just changed the game with his quickness and athleticism. He shot the ball really well from 3 [point-range]. He also did a great job on defense.”

Denis Gostev

Bishop Loughlin's Khadeen Carrington led the New York Lightning to the Hall of Fame Classic Spring Classic 16U crown over the weekend.

The Lightning won five games altogether, two in pool play and three in the playoffs. They knocked off the New Rens of New York City, 87-74, in the semifinals and also beat Teamwork Basketball (Conn.), Southern Tier Rage (N.Y.), 75-54, and Basketbull, 76-70,

In addition to Carrington, St. Raymond sophomore Shawn Jones stood out, scoring 25 points in the final. He also made two of the game’s biggest plays on the defensive end, coming up with two steals. Jones’ teammate with St. Ray’s, wing Kayvon Williams, also had a big final after an inconsistent weekend. Forward Thomas Holley of Christ the King and point guard Andrew Walker of St. Anthony’s (L.I.) also performed well for the Lightning.

“This is by far the best we played [this spring] and the funny thing is, we won the championship, but I still feel like we haven’t scratched the surface of how good we can be as a group,” Williams said. “We’re finally healthy. That was big.”

The Lightning will be in Atlanta, Ga., Memorial Day weekend for the Nike Memorial Classic.

Facebook shares sink well below $38 IPO price
[info]lillierm

Facebook shares fell more than 10 percent in early action Monday, well below the initial public offering (IPO) price of $38, giving a black eye to those involved with the social networking company's highly-anticipated debut in just the second day of trading.

Facebook shares recently traded at $34.14, down 10.7 percent. It is usually considered disappointing for a new stock to fall below its offer price so quickly, especially in the case of the most heavily traded IPO of all time.

While investor enthusiasm was high for Facebook shares, leading bankers on the deal to increase the stock price and number of shares ahead of the offering, many observers questioned the more than $100 billion valuation being placed on the social network, where revenue and earnings growth already were beginning to slow.

On Friday, Facebook's shares repeatedly tested the $38 level, but lead underwriter Morgan Stanley reportedly moved to prop up Facebook's stock.

Technical glitches also marred Facebook's IPO on Nasdaq as the exchange struggled to deal with a flood of orders. Brokers and investors were unable to cancel or alter trades that were placed early Friday morning, prompting Nasdaq to delay Facebook's open for 30 minutes.

Shares of Nasdaq OMX Group fell 0.4 percent to $21.91.

Facebook's weak debut dragged down other newly-issued online stocks Monday, such as Zynga, LinkedIn and Groupon.

Also, GSV Capital, a Woodside, Calif.-based fund that invests in venture-backed private companies, posted big declines.

GSV, which has invested in Facebook, Groupon and Zynga, as well as the social networking company Twitter, dropped 7.6 percent early Monday.

Tortorella can be cranky as he wants as long as Blueshirts win the Cup
[info]lillierm

headshotSteve Serby

John Tortorella, on his way to a Stanley Cup championship eight springs ago with the Lightning, instructed Ken Hitchcock, the Flyers coach at the time, to “shut your yap.” Only two months ago, he told Devils coach Peter DeBoer to “just shut up.”

Instead, it is Tortorella who now shuts his yap and just shuts up whenever the media demands what his paranoia convinces him are deep, dark secrets about his Rangers.

Fine. If that’s the way he chooses to represent his sport and organization, the anti-Messier way, let him. If he gets enjoyment playing the part of the bully, let him.

A TIGHT SHIP: John Tortorella can give the media the cold shoulder and no one will care if the Rangers can win their first Stanley Cup in 18 years, Steve Serby says.

Getty Images

A TIGHT SHIP: John Tortorella can give the media the cold shoulder and no one will care if the Rangers can win their first Stanley Cup in 18 years, Steve Serby says.

Just go Win the Cup.

See, he can be Attila The Coach — or the Iceatollah — with the Fourth Estate all he wants and get a free pass from Rangers fans if he delivers them the Holy Grail 18 springs after Mark Messier.

Fortunately for Tortorella, he is good enough to lead his horses to water and make them drink. It is either a testament to the way he leads and the way he motivates, or the talent, especially in goal. Or both. So there has to be more to him than meets the public eye. He can’t be Attila The Coach 24-7. There would be mutiny on that bounty, and he would be man overboard.

The Rangers, seven wins from history heading into today’s Game 3 against the Devils in Newark, have lots of respect for their coach. So go right ahead and shut your yap if you like. Just shut up if you like.

Just go win the Cup.

“He’s a fair, honest guy, and he’s hard-nosed, and he’s not going to beat around the bush,” John Mitchell said. “If you do something good, he’s not going to come and give you a big hug or anything like that. He’ll give you a nod and say, ‘Good job.’ But if you screw up, he’s going to let you know. And he’s going to get right in your face like a bulldog, and bark at you, let you know what’s up.”

It’s tough love, practiced forever by the likes of Bill Parcells and Big Bad Bob Knight, for example. Tortorella chases his second Stanley Cup in a way that certainly Frank Sinatra would understand — his way.

So, he doesn’t want reporters to coach the team?

OK. Then let’s see him coach the team, and be remembered as a New York champion and not as some hockey Richard Nixon with an enemies list.

“He turned me into an NHL player, and made me better than I ever was,” Brian Boyle said.

How did he do that?

“He pushes you outside your comfort zone, starting with training camp, and continuing on throughout the entirety of the season,” Boyle said. “It doesn’t matter who you are or what you make or what you’re doing, he expects everybody’s best, and when you give him your best, he expects more later.”

If you are thin-skinned, fuhgeddaboudit. Ever catch Mount Tortorella’s eruptions behind the bench?

“It’s not always a cakewalk with him, it’s a challenge to get on his good side,” Boyle said. “But if you buy into the system and you do what he asks you to do, he respects you for it. That’s all you can really ask for.”

Cross him and you will sit. Ask Marian Gaborik. Or anyone.

Here is Mike Rupp on Tortorella’s motivational style: “It’s just always keeping you on your toes, always keeping you ready. If you win five in a row, he’s bringing you back to earth. You never get comfortable. We were in first for a while this year, and that’s a tough spot to be in this league. You’re a target for everybody, and a measuring stick for everybody. You see teams that kind of hit a little dry spell for a while and we didn’t because he would be jamming it down our throat how we’re supposed to play. And if we’re getting away from it for one practice, he’s letting you know.”

Tortorella is the anti-Rex Ryan, but there may be a David Letterman itching to be let out of a penalty box somewhere inside him.

“It’s not like he’s going to tell a whole joke or anything like that,” Mitchell said. “He’ll say something, and he’ll crack a quick smile to let you know that he’s joking around or whatever. He does keep it relatively serious. I mean, he should. We’re in the business of winning hockey games, and inevitably winning the whole thing, so it’s important to him.”

The word the players use the most often to describe Tortorella is passionate. It is his blessing and his curse.

“We see a different side of him,” Rupp told The Post. “Obviously you guys see one way. Quite frankly, I don’t think he really cares how people perceive him. He wants to win, and we want to win too.”

Perhaps we should be thankful he isn’t President Tortorella.

Q: Mr. President, did you have sex with Monica Lewinsky?

A: I’m going to keep it in the room.

So go right ahead and shut your yap if you like. Just shut up if you like.

Just go win the Cup.

Yankees lose to Blue Jays, third in row
[info]lillierm

TORONTO — It’s a good thing the Yankees believe in themselves because looking at them from the outside there is very little current evidence that indicates trouble isn’t lurking.

By now you know the depressing script: The Yankees don’t hit with runners in scoring position.

Last night at Rogers Centre the Blue Jays hung a 4-1 loss on the anemic swinging Yankees in front of 31,266.

Every failure in the clutch brings more questions. Should Joe Girardi shuffle a lineup that collectively is using wet newspapers to swing instead of wooden bats? Because Robinson Cano, Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira hit in the middle of the deal are they to blame? Will it ever end? Or are the Yankees doomed in the middle of May?

TWISTED TALE: Robinson Cano, who went 1-for-3 and drove in the Yankees’ only run, gets twisted around after swinging and missing during the Bombers’ 4-1 loss to the Blue Jays last night.

TWISTED TALE: Robinson Cano, who went 1-for-3 and drove in the Yankees’ only run, gets twisted around after swinging and missing during the Bombers’ 4-1 loss to the Blue Jays last night.

“We are struggling, that pretty much sums it up,’’ said Derek Jeter, who had one of the five hits 21-year-old Drew Hutchison gave up in six innings in his sixth major league start. “It happens every year to every team, but it is something that can’t be explained. Does that cover it?’’

YANKEES BOX SCORE

It will do because there isn’t an answer why the Yankees are 3-for-41 with runners in scoring position over the last five games, four of which have been losses.

Phil Hughes gave up two runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings and fell to 3-5. Hutchison improved to 3-1.

A 1-3 trip through Baltimore and Canada sent the Yankees home with a 20-18 record, 4 1/2 games out of first place and ready to host the Reds in three inter-league games at Yankee Stadium this weekend.

Jeter was more concerned with the slump — four runs in the past three games — than the AL East standings.

“You drive yourself crazy looking at the standings in the middle of May,’’ Jeter said. “We need to play better, but it’s way too early to be looking at the standings. We have to stay confident.’’

Going 0-for-8 in the clutch and watching the last 10 batters make out surely wasn’t a confidence booster.

Of the eight outs with runners in position to score, Teixeira made three. At least he has a possible reason for hitting .205 in the clutch since he has been battling a severe cough for more than a month. Last night TV cameras caught him bent over hacking on the field.

“I don’t know if a day off would help,’’ said Teixeira, who fanned with a runner on second in the first, stranded two in the third with a stress-free fly to right and two more in the fifth on a pop out. “Eventually it will go away. Joe [Girardi] and I will talk about it and see if a day off helps.’’

Rest couldn’t hurt. But then again, Girardi gave Rodriguez, a .176 hitter in the clutch, off last night and it didn’t help The Men Without Bats break out.

“There is no reason to worry about [last night],’’ Teixeira said. “We can go out there and score 10 runs [tonight].’’

The Yankees’ belief that this malaise won’t last forever is correct. But while it plays out, it’s hard to watch.

“Keep getting guys on and hopefully we will break out,’’ Girardi said when asked about an idea to end the skid. “Tex has been the focus but we have a lot of guys under .200 [RISP]. As a team we are not collectively getting it done.’’

Colombia Bomb Kills Two, Injures Former Minister

Bogota—A bomb attack against a former Colombia justice minister occurred just before noon Tuesday on the streets of the capital Bogota, killing at least two people and injuring some 25, including the minister, a police commander said.

Police officers stand at the cordoned scene of bomb attack in Bogota that killed at least two people and injured a former interior minister.

President Juan Manuel Santos, speaking on nationwide television, said the attack was directed at former Interior and Justice Minister Fernando Londono, who was in a bulletproof vehicle at the time of the explosion.

The president said Mr. Londono was injured and is in stable condition at a nearby hospital. Television footage showed a stunned Mr. Londono, wearing a blue suit and red tie, bleeding from the face but walking away from the explosion with assistance from one of his bodyguards.

Mr. Londono's driver and a bodyguard were confirmed dead. Some police and government officials earlier had put the death toll at between three and five.

It wasn't clear who was responsible for the attack, but Bogota Mayor Gustavo Petro said in a Twitter message that a suspect has been arrested. He noted that police are reviewing video footage.

Bombings are common in Colombia, a country embroiled in a guerrilla war for the past 50 years. But most bombings and other terrorist attacks happen outside the major cities, in rural areas where the country's main guerrilla group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, is more powerful.

Mr. Londono was a government minister under former President Alvaro Uribe during the first couple of years of Mr. Uribe's 2002-2010 tenure in office. Mr. Londono resigned in 2003, partly due to strained relations with Colombia's Congress.

Mr. Londono served as minister during the last major bombing in Bogota in 2003, when a car bomb ripped through an exclusive social club called El Nogal, killing more than 30 people.
